In Detroit on January 6th the Titans barely lost to the Crusaders, 73-71, in Horizon play.

This was an upset, a game the Titans were expected to win. Valparaiso had a much better RPI ranking than Detroit, #144 to #261. Last season, Detroit was 0-3 against Valparaiso. The Titans have now fallen to 3-8 against the Crusaders over the last four years, including a record of 2-3 at Calihan Hall.

Valparaiso paced themselves with a statistical advantage in three pointers and defensive rebounding.


Valparaiso pulled down 24 big defensive rebounds compared to 19 by Detroit, and that created a possession gap. Valparaiso got too many quick points off threes, with 24 points of its total coming from three-point range and 12 points for Detroit.
